Definition

Controlled cold is deliberate cold exposure with a defined delivery method, conditions, duration, and exit.

In a home setting, water immersion temperature can change during use, while whole-body cryotherapy is typically delivered in brief, facility-controlled sessions. Both methods can be standardised in research or professional environments, but for individual consumer use they introduce variables — temperature drift, wetness, time constraints — that the user cannot easily control.

Dry cold containment is designed to offer a defined-duration, body-worn alternative that reduces several of these sources of variation. Fit, ambient conditions, and initial PCM state can still vary. Whether dry cold produces equivalent or distinct physiological responses remains a product-testing question.

These methods are not physiologically identical and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Methods

Cold is delivered in fundamentally different ways.

Each delivery method differs in heat transfer, contact area, coverage, preparation, and physiological effect. Findings should not be transferred between methods without qualification.

Controllability
In home settings, temperature drifts as ice melts and wetness changes skin conductance. Lab protocols can maintain stable temperatures with chillers. Consumer use requires infrastructure, drainage, and temperature monitoring.

Much of the research summarised on this site uses water immersion. Water introduces variables — conductance changes with skin wetness, temperature drifts during the session, and setup requires plumbing or manual ice management.

Evidence

What research does and does not establish.

Cold exposure can produce measurable physiological responses under defined conditions. Findings vary by method, temperature, duration, and population. Evidence for one delivery method does not automatically validate another.

Cold exposure is not a medical treatment unless a particular product has appropriate evidence and regulatory status.
